Understanding and Supporting Reproductive Mental Health
Hormonal and reproductive health conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and Endometriosis impact many women —yet they are underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and undertreated. These conditions not only affect physical health but also have significant emotional and psychological impacts. At Dr. Emma Basch & Associates, we recognize the importance of integrative care that addresses both the body and mind.
Learn More About These Conditions
-
PCOS is a hormonal disorder that occurs when your ovaries produce higher levels of androgen hormones, resulting in a hormonal imbalance.
PCOS is characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated levels of androgens and polycystic ovaries (although you don’t need to have cysts on your ovaries to be diagnosed) It can impact fertility, metabolism, and mental health.
-
PMDD is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) marked by intense mood swings, irritability, depression, and anxiety in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Unlike PMS, PMDD symptoms are debilitating and often interfere with daily functioning.
-
Endometriosis is diagnosed when tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrial tissue) grows outside the uterus, causing chronic pelvic pain, painful periods, gastrointestinal issues, and sometimes infertility.
It’s a chronic, inflammatory condition that can significantly disrupt quality of life.

Barriers to Diagnosis
Despite their prevalence, these conditions are frequently underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
Common barriers include:
Normalization of symptoms: Painful periods or mood swings are often dismissed as “normal” or exaggerated.
Medical bias: Gender bias in healthcare can lead to minimized concerns or delayed referrals.
Lack of awareness: Individuals may not recognize that their symptoms are part of a larger condition.
Overlapping symptoms: These diagnoses can mimic or overlap with other physical and mental health issues, complicating diagnosis.
